Charle Maritz, co-founder of Original Magpie and owner of Be Meal Savvy

A few years ago, I went travelling with my sister-in-law Rouxnieta and we came to the realisation that we want to do so much more with our lives. I am a trained dietitian, but always felt the need to do something more creative. Original Magpie, supplier of luxury handbags and genuine leather accessories, was born out of our shared passion for travel, fashion, and style. Our personalities fit together like puzzle pieces – where one lacks the other complements. I truly believe that this is the recipe for our success.

I have done many things in my life and learnt a lot from each phase. I also believe that this knowledge has contributed to the success of our brand.

  • I was in the military after school and this has taught me how to be reliable, consistent, and meticulous about planning. I had to think on my feet every day. At a moment’s notice, everything can change, and a new challenge can present itself. Part of me still thrives under these conditions.
  • The field of dietetics has taught me many things over the past 20 years. Initially I started my career in the UK and upon our return to South Africa, I started my own private practice called Be Meal Savvy. I learnt a lot about nutrition, but also about human nature. Fad diets come and go, but balance is forever.
  • What living with a chronic illness has taught me – I leant to me kind to myself. To find the balance between underdoing and overdoing and to read my body within these constraints. My previous motto of ‘I can push through anything’, has been replaced with an attitude of being honest about my limitations and embracing them.
  • I have learnt a few things from being a mother. It is by far the most challenging but rewarding ‘job’ I have ever had. We are all doing the best we can in the moment, and I must remind myself often that other moms who do things differently, are also doing their best. A mother’s instinct is real – sometimes I feel that I can read my child’s mind. I am not a psychic; I am just a mother.
  • Being an entrepreneur has been the scariest thing I have ever done in my life, but it has taught me about so much – taking the leap of faith to start a new business, hoping and praying that it will be a success, shedding a lot of tears, frustrations, excitement and happiness, experiencing feelings of despair, lack of sleep etc. Basically, it has taught me how to deal with an entire array of emotions every single day.

I am immensely proud of the growth of Original Magpie and the fact that will we soon be stocked by large and reputable online retail companies such as Yuppiechef and Takealot.

Am I enjoying the journey? Absolutely, and I will do it all over again any day.
